Woodford Primary School

Reading

At Woodford, we believe that all of our learners can succeed in reading, regardless of their background, needs and abilities. We want children to establish an appreciation and love of reading at all stages of their learning journey, developing the habit of reading widely and often and helping them to become lifelong learners. Provided with a wide range of high-quality texts, children will develop knowledge of themselves and the world we live in. They will be exposed to a variety of stories to help them acquire new vocabulary and develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually and socially.

We recognise the importance of preparing our children to be fluent, confident and independent readers beyond their time at primary school; our reading curriculum and inspiring storytelling are embedded throughout all of our subjects. By the time our children leave Woodford, we envisage that they will be fluent readers who can recommend books to their peers, choose books from a range of different genres and engage in discussion about choices the author makes and the impact these have on the reader.
