Woodford Primary School


Our approach to Music


At Woodford, we aim to provide all pupils with equal opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of music, to foster and stimulate enjoyment, appreciation of music and to develop self esteem through musical achievement. Through creativity and imagination, pupils are provided with a wide variety of musical experiences, to foster appreciation and understanding of music from different times and cultures.


We aim to develop personal and social and learning skills which transfer across the curriculum through participation in a wide variety of musical activities and performances.


As pupils progress, they will be encouraged to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of music. Pupils are given opportunities to explore musical ideas and meanings through listening to music by a wide variety of composers. We encourage pupils to take an active and creative part in all aspects of music (composing, performing, listening and appraising.)


Pupils are provided with a wide range of opportunities to compose in response to a variety of stimuli, to record their own work and to perform individually and with others to a variety of audiences. They have a wide range of opportunities to listen to, respond to and evaluate music from different times and places. We are fortunate to have a comprehensive range of resources for music, including ICT. Pupils are supported in their musical learning through the provision of appropriate extended and extra-curricular activities


At Key stage 1


Pupils explore a range of music and use a variety of musical instruments to accompany songs from different times and cultures. Pupils learn about duration, rhythm pulse & tempo; they begin to learn to identify high and low pitches, maintain a steady pulse and learn about a wide variety of music through inter- related dimensions.


At Key stage 2


Pupils continue to explore the musical dimensions, including structure, timbre, combining sounds and working on group composition as well as song writing. They perform and compose in groups using a wide variety of instruments, recording work to evaluate.


Extra Curricular Opportunities


We have regular visiting performers and artists into school, ranging from professional musicians to bands and groups from other schools (including frequent visits from Hele’s school music department). The children are given opportunities to perform at musical soirees, performances and concerts during the year.


Music Tuition


There are a variety of tutors available to pupils who wish to learn a musical instrument (currently piano, violin, drums, guitar, and woodwind). Our KS2 pupils receive instrumental tuition as a whole class lesson as part of the first access scheme, through Plymouth Youth Music.  This is currently ocarinas in Y3, Ukuleles in Y4, steel pans in Y5 and gamelan in Y6.

Key stage 2 have opportunities to visit Hele’s School as part of our transition links, for the feeder school Primary music liaison day. Key stage 1 and 2 are developing links to perform together in a variety of musical opportunities.
