Our approach to History


At Woodford Primary through the studying of history, children begin to develop an understanding of how the present is influenced by significant people and events from the past. By learning about people’s lives, the process of change and its impact on society, children learn to make comparisons and understand the concepts of cause, effect, difference and significance. They learn to sequence periods of local, British and world history and develop an historical vocabulary to enable them to ask and answer questions and explain their understanding.


We offer opportunities to use a wide variety of information sources including the use of visitors, themed days and outside visits to museums and places of historical interest to make the learning of history exciting and memorable. Wherever possible, local historical people and events are used to provide a context for the development of concepts and skills. Pupils gradually learn to select and organise information from increasingly complex sources so they can respond to questions and justify their own opinions.
