Summer Term Curriculum

Last Week:

 

W/b 18th June -

Phonics - We continued to read phase 4 phonics words- cvcc, ccvc and 2 syllable words including words with digraphs in. We practised recognising when words are real or alien nonsense words by seeing if we could think about what they might mean and if we could put them in a sentence and played buried treasure games.

Literacy - We wrote our own reports about our learning thinking about our progress, next steps for improvement, favourite topics and friends. These will be included in the Summer term report that comes home later this term.

Maths - We practised applying our number knowledge and skills to make shapes, create and continue patterns, measure with cubes and continue number patterns.

Topic - We continued our topic - Let's Pretend! We created different sea creatures and mermaids to go in our aquarium role play. We continued to paint pictures of our dads for our display in the covered corridor.

 

Previous Weeks:

 

W/b 11th June -

Phonics - We learn to name capital letters, match capital letters to lower case letters and practised writing them.

Literacy - We read 'Walking through the jungle' and predicted the animals from the sounds. We thought about different verbs for how the animals would travel.

Maths - We practised measuring how long and tall objects were and began to compare and order objects by weight and measure weight using cubes.

Topic - We started a new topic - Let's Pretend! We're exploring different environments like Under the sea and Space.

 

W/b 4th June -

Phonics - We continued to read phase 4 phonics words- cvcc, ccvc and 2 syllable words including words with digraphs in. We were phoneme spotter drawing phoneme buttons under words and sentences to show we know which parts of the words are digraphs and which are single sounds.

Literacy - We made our own 'Come and see...' postcards to encourage people to visit Ireland or Northern Ireland landmarks.

Maths - We weighed and measured using scales to measure in grams and jugs to measure in pints and cooked our own Irish Soda bread! Yummy!

Topic - We explored Ireland and Northern Ireland learning all about their landmarks, language, food and culture.

 

W/b 21st May -

Phonics - We continued to read and write phase 4 phonics - cvcc, ccvc and 2 syllable words.

Literacy - We wrote our own 'Outing' stories

Maths - We practised taking away using objects, fingers and number lines including counting back to find the answer. We read subtraction sentences and word problems and solved them to find the answer.

Topic - We continued exploring different materials.

 

W/b 14th May -

Phonics - We continued to read and write phase 4 phonics - cvcc, ccvc and 2 syllable words including words ending with the 'nk' cluster - bank and starting with 'sw' - swim.

Literacy - We read 'Mr Gumpy's Outing' all about a boat journey and the animals that want to tag along.

Maths - We demonstrated our understanding of number including counting, ordering, adding, subtracting, doubling, halving and sharing practically.

Topic - We explored floating and sinking. We made boats from a range of materials testing if they floated or sank. We reflected on the materials we used and thought about how we could make materials waterproof.

 

W/b 7th May -

Phonics - We continued to read and write phase 4 phonics - cvcc, ccvc and 2 syllable words including identifying digraphs and trigraphs we could spot in words.

Literacy - We wrote our own Ice poems using describing words. e.g. Ice is ...

Maths - We halved numbers both in quick recall and using objects and learnt how we could share objects into 2 groups to find half or into more groups and talked about if we had a 'fair' amount each.

Topic - We explored different materials looking at their different properties and discussing what they might be good for. We also talked about how life in the past was different from our lives now. Some children drew time traveller pictures of what they might have done in the past.

 

W/b 30th April -

Phonics - We continued to read and write phase 4 phonics - cvcc, ccvc and 2 syllable words including words starting with the 'gr' cluster - grip and the 'nt' cluster - tent.

Literacy - We read poems all about rain and ice looking at rhymes and adjectives to describe things.

Maths - We doubled numbers both in quick recall and using objects.

Topic - We explored ice and water. We found different ways to get dinosaurs out of the ice using spoons to chip the ice, warm water to melt the ice and salt to change the freezing temperature. We mixed water and sand to make cement to create our own buildings.

 

W/b 23rd April -

Phonics - We continued to read and write phase 4 phonics - cvcc, ccvc and 2 syllable words.

Literacy - We wrote our own non fiction pages about different sources of light including fireworks, sun, torches etc

Maths - We named and described 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle and rectangle) and 3D shapes (sphere, cylinder, cube, cuboid, square based pyramid and cone). We sorted shapes by their faces and properties such as rolling or sliding.

Topic - We explored light and dark making our own shadow puppets and using torches to create puppet shows, sorted animals into day (diurnal) or night (nocturnal) and thought about how we could reflect on the models we make and consider how we can make changes to our techniques in future.

 

W/b 17th April-

Phonics - We started phase 4 phonics, reading cvcc (e.g. lost), ccvc (e.g. flip) and 2 syllable words (e.g. lunchbox) and began to practise segmenting and writing them too.

Literacy - We read non-fiction books about Light. We looked at contents pages, headings and labels.

Maths - We practised counting on to add and find a total e.g. instead of counting 1, 2, 3, 4 and then 5, 6, 7 to solve 4 + 3 we practised counting by putting the 4 in our head then counting on 5, 6, 7.

Topic - We introduced our new topic 'I wonder...' all about experimenting and scientific concepts. This week we introduced our lab role play where children can experiment with magnetism and colour chromotography (making inks run to show what colours they're made from).
