Spring Term Curriculum

This Week:

 

26/3/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt reviewed and practised all the tricky words and digraphs we have learnt this term. Homework sheet will be coming home to allow children to practise any they're not secure naming/sounding quickly.

Literacy: This week we read minibeast poems recognising adjectives and rhyme.

Maths: This week we have been looking at patterns and creating our own. We made 3 colour patterns and some children began to look at patterns with numbers.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Circle of Life'. This week we learnt about Easter.

19/3/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the trigraphs 'ear' and 'air' (Trigraph is 3 letters making 1 sound.) We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like hear and hair.

Literacy: This week we wrote our own recounts of our visit to Pennywell Farm. Some children used time adverbials like 'first', 'then', 'next' and 'finally'.

Maths: This week we have been using coins to make totals. We used 1ps then looked at how we can use 2p, 5p and 10p coins to make totals in different ways.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Circle of Life'. This week we made our own minibeasts and matched farm animals and their babies.

 

12/3/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the digraphs 'oi' and 'qu' (Digraph is 2 letters making 1 sound.) We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like coin or point and quick.

Literacy: This week we wrote our own simple recounts of our minibeast hunt. Some children used time adverbials like 'first', 'then', 'next' and 'finally'.

Maths: This week we have been counting irregular arrangements in pictures and using a crossing out strategy to be accurate, adding, and saying 1 more than a number to 20 mentally or using a number line.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Circle of Life'. This week we went to Pennywell Farm and learnt all about the animals and how they grow and change.

 

5/3/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the digraphs 'th' (There are two ways to say ut, a soft th which we call big crazy clown as in 'thumb' and a shorter, harder sound we call little crazy clown as in 'this'. We also learnt that you can make an 'er' sound in different ways - 'ur' and 'ir' and practised writing it with an 'er' sound.' (Digraph is 2 letters making 1 sound.) We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like teacher or river and think or them.

Literacy: This week we read simple recounts of visits to look for minibeasts. We talked about fiction and non-fiction and used time adverbials like 'first', 'then', 'next' and 'finally'.

Maths: This week we have been ordering objects by length and measuring them using cubes. Some children began to use rulers to measure in cm.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Circle of Life'. This week we went on our own minibeast hunt. We caught worms, woodlice, slugs, snail shells and a centipede!

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the digraphs 'or' (Digraph is 2 letters making 1 sound.) We practised writing it in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like fork or tor.

Literacy: Snow days!

Maths: This week we learnt how to tell o'clock and some half past times. We played what's the time Mr Wolf.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Circle of Life'. This week we did observational drawings of our plants.

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the digraphs 'ee', 'ea' and 'ar' (Digraph is 2 letters making 1 sound.) We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like car or farm and sea or steam.

Literacy: This week we read Nick Butterworth's The Treasure Hunt. We read different clues and found treasure around our classrooms.

Maths: This week we have been counting, comparing and ordering numbers to 20.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Circle of Life'. This week we planted cress and sunflowers, we're going to watch how they grow and change.

 

5/2/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the digraphs 'ch' and 'oo' (Digraph is 2 letters making 1 sound) and 'igh' (Trigraph - 3 letters, 1 sound.) We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like moo or chop.

Literacy: This week we read lots of bear poems and spotted and generated rhymes.

Maths: This week we have been learning about 3D shapes. We learnt the names of cubes, cuboids, cones, square based pyramids, spheres and cylinder.

Topic: This week learnt all about Chinese New Year. We created our own ribbon dances, used tweezer chopsticks, learnt to count to 10 in mandarin and how to say happy new year, hello and my name is in Mandarin.

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the digraphs 'ay' and 'ow' (Digraph is 2 letters making 1 sound.) We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like pay or play and bow or blow.

Literacy: This week we had a go at writing our own instructions for making porridge playdough independently.

Maths: This week we have been finding 1 less than a number to 5, 10 or 20 practically, using a numberline or mentally and looking at how we can record these calculations.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we learnt how to use our porridge oats to make porridge playdough at the dough station.

 

22/1/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name the digraphs 'ng' and 'sh' (Digraph is 2 letters making 1 sound.) We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like shop and ring.

Literacy: This week we wrote our own instructions for making porridge.

Maths: This week we have been taking away and beginning to look at how we can record these calculations.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we compared the habitats of polar bears and brown bears.

 

15/1/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name v, y and z. We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like van, yam and zip and children who were ready had a go at putting them in sentences - 'The zip is up.', 'I got the yam.'

Literacy: This week we read 'Goldilocks and the 3 bears' and learnt some instructions for making porridge.

Maths: This week we have been exploring capacity using the vocabulary 'full', 'empty', 'nearly empty' and 'half full'. We have begun to compare containers to find out which holds the most.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we watched the adults perform Goldilocks and the 3 bears and have been creating our own performances for our friends narrating and acting the story.

 

8/1/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name w and x. We practised writing them in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like fox and wig and children who were ready had a go at putting them in sentences - 'The fox is in the box.', 'I got a wig.'

Literacy: This week we wrote our own hunt stories based on 'We're going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen.

Maths: We practised adding two groups of objects together and finding the total. We began to look at how we could record these number sentences.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we created our own bear hunts in the garden using different crates and materials and explored light.

 

1/1/18

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and name j. We practised writing it in cursive. We practised segmenting and writing words like jug, jam, jet and children who were ready had a go at putting them in sentences - 'The jet is big.', 'I got red jam.'

Literacy: This week we read 'We're going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen. We talked about how the characters might be feeling and created a story map so we could retell the story using time words like 'First', 'Next', 'Then', 'After that', 'Finally.'

Maths: (2 day week - no maths)

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we found footprints outside our classroom, we followed them to the forest and found a bear! He's now living in our cave in our roleplay.
