W/b 27th March -

Phonics - This week e reviewed all the digraphs and tricky words we've learnt this term.

Literacy - This week we have been reading minibeast poems and looking for rhymes and adjectives.

Maths - This week we have been creating our own colour and number patterns.

Topic -  This week we have been learning about how Easter is celebrated.

 

We are now learning digraphs. We sent home a handout to show you the digraphs we will be learning and the actions we will be using. Jolly Phonics Digraph handout

W/b 20th March -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the trigraphs (3 letters, 1 sound) air (as in fair) and ear (as in near). We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'tear' and 'hair' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We practised the tricky words we have learnt so far.

Literacy - This week we have been writing our own independent recounts of our trip to Pennywell.

Maths - This week we have been learning about money. We practised recognising different coins. We used 1p coins to buy things then we looked at how we could swop 1p coins for larger value coins.

Topic - Our topic this half term is The Circle of Life. This week we created our own minibeast dances. Look out for videos of them next week!

 

W/b 13th March -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound) oi (as in coin) and qu (as in quack). We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'coin' and 'quit' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We practised the tricky words 'they' and 'here'.

Literacy - This week we have been writing recounts of our minibeast hunts and using the time connectives - First, Then, Next and Finally.

Maths - This week we have been counting and adding using strategies to ensure we count accurately.

Topic - Our topic this half term is The Circle of Life. This week we went to Pennywell Farm! We saw lots of animals in different stages of growth.

 

W/b 6th March -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound) er (as in her) and ur (as in fur). We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'her' and 'surf' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We practised the tricky words 'my' and 'all'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading recounts of minibeast hunts and using the time connectives - First, Then, Next and Finally.

Maths - This week we have been learning about capacity. We used the words 'full', 'half full' and 'empty'. We compared containers and thought about which would have the largest capacity and tested to find out.

Topic - Our topic this half term is The Circle of Life. This week we went on a minibeast hunt!

 

W/b 27th February -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound) or (as in for) and th (which can make 2 different sounds as in bath and this). We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'corn' and 'thin'/'this' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We practised the tricky word 'are'.

Literacy - This week we have been writing our own 'Treasure hunt' clues or stories based on Percy the Park keeper by Nick Butterworth. We have read stories and predicted 'what might be next?'.

Maths - This week we have been learning about time. We looked at clocks and practise making o'clock times. Some children practised 'half past'.

Topic - Our topic this half term is The Circle of Life. This week we drew pictures of our growing cress and sunflowers really looking at the colours and detail. We also celebrated World Book week by taking part in a whole school story, dressing up and reading with our families - thanks to everyone who took part. On Tuesday we had our own pancakes to celebrate pancake day!

 

W/b 20th February -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound) ee and ea (these make the same sound) and ar (as in car). We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'meat' and 'farm' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We learnt the tricky word 'are'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading 'The treasure hunt' with Percy the Park keeper by Nick Butterworth. We have read lots of clues and had treasure hunts in our classrooms.

Maths - This week we have been practising recognising and ordering numbers to 20. Some children ordered 3 non-consecutive numbers e.g. 7, 14, 17 and worked out which numbers go in between them.

Topic - Our topic this half term is The Circle of Life. This week we started by looking at plants. We planted our own Sunflower and Cress seeds.

 

W/b 6th February -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound) ch, oo (as in boo) and igh (as in light). We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'moon' and 'chop' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We learnt the tricky words 'you' and 'was'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading bear poems. We have looked out for rhymes in the poems.

Maths - This week we have been learning the names of 3D shapes - cube, cone, sphere, cylinder, cuboid and square-based pyramid. We have begun to describe shapes using shape vocabulary, 'faces', 'corners', 'solid', 'flat' and 'curved'.

Topic - Our topic this week was Chinese New Year. We learnt about how it is celebrated and created our own masks, dragons and dances.

 

W/b 30th January -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound) ay and ow (as in snow). We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'play' and 'snow' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We practised the tricky words 'me', 'we', 'be' and 'she'.

Literacy - This week we have been writing our own instructions for making playdough.

Maths - This week we have been finding 1 less than a given number. We practised using objects or a number line to find 1 less. We played games about finding 1 less and we practised saying 1 less without having to use any resources.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Bears'.

 

W/b 23rd January -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the digraphs (2 letters, 1 sound) ng and sh. We have talked about words that use these sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'sing' and 'shop' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We practised the tricky words 'me', 'we', 'be' and 'she'.

Literacy - This week we have been writing our own instructions for making porridge.

Maths - This week we have been taking away. We practised taking away objects practically. Saying the subtraction calculation and recording take aways using pictures, dots or numbers.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we used the computers to create our own goldilocks story scenes. The children learnt how to resize objects and had great fun exploring what they could create.

 

W/b 16th January -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters v, y and z. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'van', 'yak' and 'zip' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We learnt the tricky word 'me', 'be' and 'she'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading Goldilocks and the 3 bears. We read some non-fiction instructions and them followed them to make our own porridge.

Maths - This week we have been measuring. We have used cubes to measure how long or tall objects are. We have used playdough to make snakes and worms the same size, longer or shorter than others. We have used pictures to order the size of the Bears, their bowls, chairs, spoons and beds.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we have been learning some facts about Bears. We have compared Polar bears and Brown bears and found out about their similarities and differences.

We had our height and weight check this week.

 

W/b 9th January -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters w and x. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'wax', 'fox' and 'wet' and children who were ready had a go at putting the word in a short sentence.

We learnt the tricky word 'we'.

Literacy - This week we have been writing our own 'hunts' and looking in all kinds of places to find things!

Maths - This week we have been adding. We have used objects to add 2 single digit numbers together. We have looked at how we can record a number sentence using pictures, dots or numbers and symbols.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we use torches in our own bear den and explored using wires, bulbs and batteries to make a light. We also explored colour mixing and made different colours and painted our own leaves and made pictures using leaves we'd collected.

 

W/b 2nd January -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letter j. We have said its letter name and the sound it makes. We have talked about words that begin with j and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We modelled joining 'jam' and 'jet'. We also encouraged children to think of their own sentence with that word in and anyone who was ready had a go at writing it.

We continued to practise our tricky words 'he', 'He', 'the', 'The', 'I', 'no', 'go', and 'to' and 'said'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading 'We're going on a Bear Hunt' by Michael Rosen. We practised reciting the story and went on our own hunt!

Maths - This week we have been ordering numbers from 0 to 20. We practised putting them in order and working out what numbers were missing in some number lines

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Bears'. This week we went on our own Bear Hunt in the forest! We found lots of little bears and one very big bear! We invited him to live in our role play bear cave!
