Autumn Term Curriculum

Here we will be sharing what we have learnt the previous week so that children can practise and consolidate the knowledge and skills they have learnt.

Last Week:

 

W/b 28th November -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters l and the digraph ll. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'let' and 'hill' for the children who were ready.

We continued to practise our tricky words 'he', 'He', 'the', 'The', 'I', 'no', 'go', 'to' and 'said'.

Literacy - This week we have been writing 'All about me' to tell people our names, things we can do, things we like and who our friends/pals are.

Maths - This week we have been practising finding 1 more and 1 less than a number practically. We have used the words 'more', 'less', 'before' and 'after' to talk about different numbers.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we introduced our advent calendar, the children were very excited! We have been really practising our Nativity and are nearly ready to perform!

W/b 21st November -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters h and b. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'hot' and 'bed' for the children who were ready.

We continued to practise our tricky words 'he', 'He', 'the', 'The', 'I', 'no', 'go', and 'to' and learnt 'said'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading a story all about Titch. We have practised our Inference skills by talking about how we felt Titch was feeling and why.

Maths - This week we have been using different maths language related to 2D shapes. We have named squares, circles, triangles and rectangles and begun to discuss their 'corners' and 'sides'.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we talked about Advent and the beginning of the Christmas season. We have begun to practise our Nativity on the stage.

 

W/b 14th November -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters u and r. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'run' and 'red' for the children who were ready.

We continued to practise our tricky words 'he', 'He', 'the', 'The', 'I', 'no', 'go', and 'to'.

Literacy - This week we have been writing invitations and party lists for Kipper's Birthday really listening for the initial sounds and any other sounds we can hear in words.

Maths - This week we have been using different maths language. We have use language related to length and height to compare and order objects and solve simple problems relating to size.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we continued to talked about how we celebrate birthdays at home and in school. We talked about how children celebrated bonfire night and created our own fireworks pictures on the computer. We have begun to talk about our Nativity.

 

W/b 7th November -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters e, k and ck. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'sack' and 'egg' for the children who were ready.

We practised our tricky words 'he', 'He', 'the', 'The' and 'I'. The children began to learn 'no', 'go', and 'to'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading Kipper's Birthday and finding out how we all celebrate our birthday's differently. We looked at what sort of things we need for a birthday party and practised our reading together.

Maths - This week we have been using different maths language. We have use language related to more and less than when looking at numbers. The children also practised their number recognition by matching the correct amount of objects to the number they had and compared sets of objects to find out who had more/less.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we talked about how we celebrate birthdays at home and in school and learnt about Bonfire night. We talked about what the children did to celebrate Bonfire night this year and how we all celebrate things differently.

 

W/b 31st October -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters g and o. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'got' and 'pig' for the children who were ready.

We practised our tricky words 'he', 'He', 'the', 'The' and 'I'. Children had a go at showing us which of these words they could read on their fish homework sheet. You will get the homework sheets back  either today (Friday) or early next week.

Literacy - This week we have been listening to and reading sentences with alliteration. We have been looking at the initial sounds in words and identifying what sound the words start with.

Maths - This week we have using different maths language. We have use language related to time to sequence when we do activities in the day - morning, afternoon, evening, night as well as days of the week. We have also used positional language to describe where objects are and to give instructions about where to put things.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we talked about how we celebrate birthdays at home and in school and learnt about the Hindu festival of Divali.

  

 

W/b 17th October -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters m and d. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'dad' and 'mad' for the children who were ready.

We learnt to recognise the word 'he' and 'He' in phonics and in books we've read and practised 'the', 'The' and 'I'.

Children have a homework sheet to practise the tricky words and sounds we have learnt.

Literacy - This week we have been writing our own 'On my way home' captions or sentences based on the story by Jill Murphy. We used initial sounds for words e.g. I m a t  (I met a tiger) and if we could we added more sounds and practised joining them.

Maths - This week we have been learning about adding with small numbers. We have practise finding different ways to make 5 and 6. We have looked at written calculations and used the vocabulary - 'add', 'plus', 'equals', 'makes', 'altogether' and 'total'.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. This week we visited the KS2 hall to practise for the disco! We learnt all about what would happen, where to go and how to have fun safely!

 

 

W/b 10th October -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters i and n. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'it' and 'nap' for the children who were ready.

We continued to practise recognising the word 'the' and 'The' in phonics and in books we've read and introduced 'I'.

Literacy - This week we have been reading 'On my way home' by Jill Murphy. We have learnt a shortened version to retell and have been sequencing pictures from the story and drawing our own story maps.

Maths - This week we have been learning about subitising with small numbers. How to recognise a number without having to count e.g. dots on a dice, fingers on our hands. We have practised recognising and counting accurately using larger numbers and some of us have practised problem solving to work out who has won a game and using our maths language to explain how we know.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. This week we had our first fire drill! We learnt about where to go and what to do when the fire bell goes off. All of Foundation were amazing and we were so proud of them!

 

W/b 3rd October -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters t and p. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We have modelled the letter on paper in a highlighter and children have traced over it to practise the letter shape until they felt confident to try it on their own. We modelled joining 'cat' and 'pat' for the children who were ready.

We practise blending the words - cat, sat, pat, tap and at. We practised recognising the word 'the' and 'The' in phonics and in books we've read.

Literacy - We have been writing our own non-fiction labels. First we put up labels in the classrooms. Next week looked at pictures of animals - cats, snakes and ants. We sounded out the first sounds and any other sounds we could hear and practised writing them in cursive form.

Maths - This week we have been learning about patterns. We copied, continued and created different patterns. We started with 2 colours, then increased the difficulty e.g. red, red, blue, red, red, blue. We then looked at 3 step patterns e.g. red circle, blue star, yellow square, red circle, blue star, yellow square

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. This week we visited our forest! We learnt about Sukkot the Jewish harvest festival. We made our own Sukkahs.

 

 

W/b 26th September -

Phonics - This week in Phonics we have learnt to recognise the letters c, s and a. We have said their letter name and the sound they make. We have talked about words that begin with those letters and about other words that have those letter sounds in different places. We have practised our new cursive letter formation. We often model the letter on paper in a highlighter and children trace over it to practise the letter shape until they are confident to try it on their own.

Literacy - We have been learning all about rhyme! We have read rhyming stories, watched a rhyme time video and sung rhyming songs. We have practised identifying rhymes and tried to create our own.

Maths - This week we have been practising our accurate counting making sure that we say one number name for each object we touch/move. We have also matched number cards to our groups of objects.

Topic - Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. This week we have continued to get to know our new school. We have had P.E. in the hall, ICT in the ICT suite, visited the library and had music in the music room. Next week the plan is to visit the forest so if you haven't brought in your willies please bring them in on Monday! Thanks
