Autumn Term Curriculum

This Week:

 

27/11/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letter l and begun to talk about how in some words it can be a digraph with two 'll' still making just one 'l' sound like in the words 'hill' and 'till'. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters. We learnt to recognise the tricky word said.

Literacy: This week we wrote about ourselves beginning to write short simple sentences using as many sounds as we could hear. 'I am ...', 'I can...', 'I like...'

Maths: This week we have been learning about money. We have been recognising and sorting coins and using 1p coins to buy different toys.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we have begun to look a how we will celebrate advent in school with a special interactive advent calendar.

20/11/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters h and b. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters. We learnt to recognise the tricky word said.

Literacy: This week we read stories all about people. We compared what we look like, eat and enjoy doing. We read a story about persevering to overcome things we're a bit nervous of trying.

Maths: This week we have been comparing amounts of objects using the vocabulary 'more' and 'fewer' to compare them. Some children have practised working out 'how many more?' were in the larger amount.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we have begun to talk about Advent and how Christians celebrate the countdown to Jesus's birth.

 

13/11/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters u and r. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters. We learnt to recognise the tricky word said.

Literacy: This week we wrote our own invitations and party lists for Kipper's birthday. We focused on listening to the sounds we could hear in the words.

Maths: This week we have been comparing the height and length of different objects using the vocabulary 'short', 'long' and 'tall' to describe them. We put different  objects in order by their size.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. This week we have begun to talk about our Christmas Nativity and auditioned for roles.

 

6/11/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters k and e. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters. We learnt to recognise the tricky words To/to.

Literacy: This week we read Kipper's birthday. Kipper invited his friends to his party but made a mistake with the word 'tomorrow' and they missed the party. Luckily Kipper could have a late birthday with his friends the next day.

Maths: This week we have been naming 2D flat shapes - circle, triangle, square, rectangle. We have been using the vocabulary 'sides' and 'corners' to talk about the properties of the different shapes.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. We have new role plays - a bakery and a birthday party! The children have loved celebrating birthdays. This week we learnt about how we all celebrated Fireworks/Bonfire night and compared what was the same and what was different about how we celebrated. We also learnt about Remembrance Day and collaged our own poppies.

 

30/10/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters g and o. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters. We learnt to recognise the tricky words No/no and Go/go.

Literacy: This week we learnt about alliteration, when words start with the same sounds. We made up our own alliterative sentences and matched words that start with the same sound.

Maths: This week we used positional language to describe where the bear was hiding and sequenced our day into morning, afternoon and evening and talked about different activities we do during these times.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Celebrations'. We have new role plays - a bakery and a birthday party! The children have loved celebrating birthdays. This week we learnt about the Hindu celebration of Divali a festival of lights.

The children shared their 'On my way home' journey homework. It was amazing to see the different posters and models they created and they are displayed around the school.

 

16/10/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters m and d. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters.

Literacy: This week we had a go at labelling animals or writing a short sentence using the sounds we know based on 'On my way home' by Jill Murphy.

Maths: This week we practised finding different ways to make a number using pictures and objects e.g. 5 can be made by 5+0, 4+1, 3+2, 2+3, 1+4 and 0+5. We also looked at how how we could take objects away to make our total smaller.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. This week we practised for the disco finding out where to go, what would happen and what we needed to do at the disco. It was great to see so many of you dressed up on Thursday night! Well done to Lucas and Daisy who won the best costume medals.

The children have all been given half term homework on Friday - an artwork project and tricky words/phonemes and letter formation sheets from our learning this half term to practise.

 

09/10/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters i and n. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters.

Literacy: This week we read 'On my way home' by Jill Murphy and talked all about different ideas about how Claire could have gotten hurt.

Maths: This week we practised recognising and ordering numbers.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. This week we learnt to use our creative recycle station to make our own models using our imaginations. We went to whole school singing and Harvest assemblies and were very proud to join in singing with everyone else with the Harvest Samba.

 

02/10/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters t and p. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters.

Literacy: We wrote our own labels using c, s, a and other letters we know from our names to label food, animals and objects around the classroom.

Maths: This week we continued repeating patterns and created our own patterns using colours, shapes or objects.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. This week we went to the forest. We learnt about our boundaries and had fun collecting leaves to make Sukkah's like Jewish people celebrate Sukkot in.

 

25/9/17

Phonics: This week we have learnt to recognise and say the sounds and name for the letters c, s, and a. We have practised writing them in cursive formation. We have talked about words that start with those sounds and some children have begun to blend CVC words that start with those letters.

Literacy: We read Planet Ocky - Bump and Jump. We talked about the different words that rhyme and how the beginning of rhyming words are different but that the ends are the same. We practised identifying rhymes in lots of different stories, games and activities. We generated our own words that rhyme with cat, log and tree.

Maths: We practised using different strategies to make sure that we could count accurately. We counted objects from a larger group making sure that we stopped when we got to the given total.

Topic: Our topic this half term is 'Welcome to Woodford'. We went to the library and the ICT suite for the first time. We found out about different people who help us in school. We also went to our first assemblies and practised our fire drill.
